Headguards are an extremely important piece of equipment in boxing. According to the amateur boxing association AIBA, amateur boxers must wear protective headgear that meets their requirements and is also IBA stamped. Frequently Asked Questions

No, male amateur boxers between the ages of 19 - 40 years of age do not have to wear when competing in an amatuer bout. This was a decision that was made back in 2013 by the AIBA when they cancelled the mandatory requirement.

Amatuer boxers, according to the AIBA, have to wear AIBA approved headgear, hand wraps and gloves that have the AIBA stamp which is now the IBA stamp. They will also wear both competition shorts and competition vests. In addition to this, they wear their own boxing boots. The whole outfit should be the colour of their corner (red or blue).

Headgear For Amateur Boxing

AIBA-approved head guards have been deemed the only acceptable head guards to wear for competitive amateur bouts. The AIBA head guards feature an open face design which provides padding and protection around the eyebrows, cheek and temple to prevent and protect against cuts, bruises, scrapes and swelling.

All AIBA-approved head guards are made from high-quality genuine leather and feature gel fusion padding for maximum strike energy management and protection. All of these AIBA head guards will also feature the latest AIBA stamp which is now the IBA stamp indicating that they can be used in competition.

They also come in either red or blue to represent the colours of the two corners in a competitive amateur fight.
